Texas Hold'em and Omaha Poker Rules
The wildly popular poker game
Texas Hold’em is quite similar to
Omaha Poker. Both are community card games, meaning that some cards are
shared or dealt face-up in the middle of the table and are used by all
players to augment the cards in their hands to make the best possible
poker hand.
Additionally, in both Texas Hold’em and Omaha poker games, there
are four rounds of betting, a rotating dealer button marking
the player designated to be the dealer, and two blind (or forced) bets
to start building the pot. In both poker games,
each player has to make the best possible hand from his own cards and the
community cards, but the rules are somewhat different between the two
poker games.
Both Texas Hold’em and Omaha poker proceed as follows. The dealer
shuffles a 52-card deck. After each hand, the dealer button
moves clockwise around the table. In online poker the button only serves to
mark the players who must make forced bets at the beginning of a
new round, since the online casino does all the dealing.
The player to the immediate
left of the dealer puts up a bet called the “little blind”, which is
usually half of the the minimum bet.
The person immediately to the left of the little blind must post the “big blind”,
which is equal to the full bet
in that round.
Cards are dealt differently in Omaha and Texas Hold’em
poker. In Texas Hold’em each player is dealt two cards, one at a time,
face down. These are called “hole cards”. In Omaha poker each player is
dealt four hole cards.
Both in Texas Hold'em and Omaha the first round of betting takes place
beginning with the person to the left of the player who posted the big
blind. Players may call, raise, or fold. After the first round of
betting the dealer discards the top card of the deck and deals
three cards face-up on the table. In both poker games these cards are called
“the flop”.
Another round of betting takes place. Now and on each subsequent
round of betting each player may check, call, raise, or fold. Then the
dealer discards the top card again and deals one more card face-up. This fourth
community card is called “the turn”. The third round of betting
takes place.
The dealer discards the top card and deals a fifth card, called “the
river”, face-up on the table. After that the fourth and final round of betting follows.
In Texas Hold’em players use any combination of the five community
cards and two hole cards to build the best hand.
In Omaha poker players use exactly two of their four hole cards and three of
the community cards to make the best hand.
Though it is not always true, the winning hands in Omaha poker
tend to be better than the winning hands in Texas Hold’em and
that should be taken into account when a Texas Hold'em player is moving to Omaha poker.
